Xmas Eve, Christmas Eve, Qwanza, Hanukka, Yule...on the way to the new year.

I have 14 minutes to Christmas Day, which really means nothing to me.
Christmas Day.
christmas day.
The 25th day in the month of December.
6 days before the end of the year.
The day doesn't mean much to an agnostic like me. It's a day off of work where obligatory gifts are exchanged.

It's now 10 minutes to midnight.

It's Christmas Day now...Looking over my sister as she sleeps in a drunken slumber. Sober night for me. Should I feel bad about my lack of reverence on this day? For being more upset about my lack of alcoholic consumption, then my faith in the birth of the christian messiah? Most people don't but I don't think they even think about the meaning, original meaning that is, surrounding the celebration of this day. I think of the beginning of things often.

How is it that we have come to be where we are? Everyone has their personal story of who they are. Some of the things that happen to us is out of out control. We become a product of our environment.

It's the morning now and whatever my tired brain was thinking last night, has left my head. It's a morning of hanging with my sister and her roommate...nothing more...just that feeling that comes around the holidays...Could that be the christmas spirit? Or just a day off of work? LOL

A Check In Of Sorts...

I haven't been around...I guess I never expected much from the blog. Most blogs that do well have some sort of thesis. Well, mine doesn't have a thesis. I always found my thesis at the editing stage of my papers. It was lost in muck or never quite there in the first place. My professors hated it. I would turn in a rough draft, sans thesis, and they would always freak as to where my thesis was. Better get a thesis.

Life is constently looking for a thesis. In The Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy , the answer given by the all knowing computer as to the meaning of life, the Universe,...everything is 42. Which is not a thesis. Would it be better if my life could be summed up in a well thought out 3 part sentence that wrapped up the sum of the next 12 pages? Let's all bow our heads in a moment of prayer that that doesn't happen.

Bringing the story to a close for a moment, I will be blogging more often so that I don't end up with a 12 page paper on events in my life and that maybe I find a thesis. If not a permanent one, at least one that can be edited ocassionally.

A day out on the boat

You know how you can have one of those days where you are glad to be alive. Not every day is like that and it is a good thing too. We would get bored with so many 'giddy' days. I had one of these recently. Last Sunday, to be exact.

The day was nothing too special, but for some people, including me, a day like this doesn't happen everyday. A day out on the boat with my sister and some friends. It was gorgeous. The sky was blue and the water was that clear green torquise that seems to be the trademark of the Gulf waters.

We didn't go far from the channel where the boat was kept, near Hudson. We found a beautiful stretch of sandbar and anchored the boat. Popped open a beer (Bud Light, not my first choice but beggers can't be choosers.) I immediately stripped off what clothing I had on over my bathing suit and jumped over the side of the boat. The water was cold at first in contrast to the hot sun.

I began doing the sting ray shuffle (instead of walking normally in the water, you have to shuffle your feet, so that you scare the sting rays away. Stepping on one would have been a 'bad' day) with my hands just above the water, trying to get use to the temperature. I finally just ducked in. I was determined to find an uninhabited conch shell. For a couple of years I have been searching for one. Mainly just randomly. It hasn't been my major pursuit in life but it is my list of things I want to do before I die.

Anyhow, everyone else was riding the jetski around our little cove and having their own fun. I snatched up the floating chair and was just drifitng away with my beer. The sun beaming down on me and the water cooling what the sun burnt.

Later, I whipped out the snorkel gear to search for my conch. But while by the boat, someone shouts out that they see a sting ray. Coming right at us. I quickly dive under the water in the sting rays direction but it is too fast for me to catch up to. Just as I gave up, another shout that yet another sting ray was headed my way. I must have moved though cause this one never got close. It was thrilling nontheless.

I stayed in the water all day. I got out a few times to get my bearings but otherwise I was one with the Gulf. We tried dragging ourselves from the back of the jet ski but realized that A. it just doesn't work B. Were too drunk or C. Needed some skill. It was one of those goofy things that you do when you are a kid and forget to do when you are an adult.

The day was finally dying down. We all got back into the boat and started to leave when we saw dolphins in our wake. 5 or 6 of them. Here we go again. Me and my sister go Forest Gumping over the boat and do our best to get near them but we must have been making too much noise. Either way, even on our second attempt to play with the dolphins, we only got to look at them. Maybe next time. They are beautiful creatures and it is exhilarating to see them free and in the open.

We stopped the boat at a pier restaurant and had some good food with a little bit more beer.

It was good. The whole day was good.

Something to put into words.

Maybe if I get the chance, I'll get around to telling you about a beautiful winter day on the island of Cyprus in the valley near Galata.
